2015 NWPA WIA Youth Services Career Camp- “Career Scene Investigation”

This year the theme of Career Camp was Career Scene Investigation.  Although, the theme may have been unconventional, the kids loved it. We had 33 youth from Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Forest, Venango and Warren Counties participate in camp this year.

The premise of camp was to divide the youth into groups; each group would investigate the “crime scene” in which someone stole Walmart gift cards from one of our staff’s office. The groups also each received a career to research that could potentially help solve a crime. The goal was to have the students complete several activities that would give each group the opportunity to research careers, find the culprit, and listen to speakers discuss law enforcement and criminal justice related fields.

The groups each had 2 minutes to review and investigate the clues left at the “crime scene.” Each group was given a small notebook which they could use to take notes on what they saw at the scene and interrogate witnesses/suspects. They also had to complete 6 stations where they reviewed evidence left at the scene, i.e., footprints, fingerprints, dental markings, etc. Each youth received an occupation in the criminal justice field that they conducted research on regarding job duties, salary, education needed, skills needed, etc.

The youth had to opportunity to listen to two speakers, Trooper Michelle McGee and former Venango County Jail Warden, Major Smith. Both speakers gave the youth valuable information regarding making good choices, internet safety, cyber bullying, and information on each of their jobs and how they chose those career paths.

To wrap things up they worked on their final projects, where they presented to the judges their careers and who they thought committed the crime.  Walmart gift cards were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. All youth attending camp were given a $25 Walmart gift card, certificate, and were able to choose one prize valued at $25. Other awards that were given were for Peer Mentor (voted on by the youth), Leadership and Participation. The winners of these awards were also given a $25 Walmart gift card.
