Mercyhurst students create website for NW PA CareerLink®

Junior and senior graphic arts students from Mercyhurst University have unleashed their talents on the Northwest Pennsylvania (PA) CareerLink® by creating a new user-friendly website that makes it easier for employers and job seekers to navigate the organization’s services. The new website makes its official debut today.

“This transformation allows for the latest trends while also providing the public with the technology vehicle that they need to find a job,” said Rick Cornwell, site administrator for the PA CareerLink® Erie County center.

Job seekers will be able to navigate through unlimited, practical resources that include: JobGateway®, a clearinghouse for job seekers; veterans’ services; the latest job opportunities; free career-related workshops; and tips on how to prepare for a career fair. Employers will be able to learn more about workplace skills assessments, on-the-job training assistance and current market-labor industry statistics. Partner links will also be available including: Bureau of Workforce Partnership & Operations, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Greater Erie Community Action Committee, Venango Training and Development Center, and the Northwest PA Workforce Investment Area.

Sixteen Mercyhurst students collaborated on the project, including Colin Kimball, James Conley, Jordan Cargill, Giovanna Thompson, Anna Cooney, Kelsey Elliott, Travis Beck, Ryan Bohince, Anna Wesley, Kaelan Fennell, Angela Zanaglio, Megan Steele, Nicholas Szumigala, Rachel Clark, Leena Clint and Joseph Lehr. They were guided by Jodi Staniunas Hopper, associate professor of art and chair of the Mercyhurst Art Department, and Peter Stadtmueller, graphic design program director.

“We value the partnership we have with PA CareerLink®, which has provided our students with a great opportunity to take their theoretical knowledge and apply it,” Staniunas Hopper said. “That this hands-on experience benefits not only their creative development but helps an important organization achieve its mission is rewarding.”

Recently, the Mercyhurst students were recognized for their work by winning several ADDY awards. Sponsored by the American Advertising Federation and the Erie Ad Club, the ADDYs honor excellence in advertising and cultivate the highest creative standards in the industry.

“Working with this caliber of students will only enhance and add credibility to the PA CareerLink® services that are provided to the community,” said Jane Horetsky, PA CareerLink® Crawford and Warren counties site administrator. “This is an amazing partnership where both the Mercyhurst students and Northwest PA CareerLink® are winners.”
